Exams Have Begun!

Exam weeks officially begun! Good luck to all USM students who will be taking their finals throughout the three weeks and also those who are currently on the battlefields. May God at your side.

Also, all the best to those who are facing the problems like us USM-ers. Buena suerte.

Oh yea, my laptop officially crashed, yet again! God knows when it's gonna stop crashing.

Last Day of the Semester

Just a blink of an eye and it's the last day of the lectures for the semester before we're heading to the one week of hard training to prepare ourselves for the grand battles of the semester. After almost half a year attending ever boring lectures and tutorials, it's high time for us to apply what we have gained from the spent time for the better of our futures but the problem is, WHAT indeed did I learned during the semester???

I did attend most of the lectures but most of the time, it's only my physical self was presented. That's right, just the shell was at the halls, brain-vacanted. That's how I went through most of the lectures this whole semester. Really, out of the four core subjects, only one worth paying attention to.

Whenever there are pop quizzes or mid-term tests, everyone (me included) started to rush to the nearest smartest person and copy (former) or start digesting the super thick textbooks (latter), hoping to save our asses. But it's Universities' life.

Finals are coming and I guess it's time to really fight for better results. There's two subjects I really need to work my butt off to bring up the marks after disappointing performances at both mid-terms. Wonders if the dean list's still within my grasps?

Hope won't end up as stressful as him...Aiyar, who am I kidding with?

Festival Of Nations

Just a rough update.

Festival Of Nations (FoN) was held on last Saturday, 17 October 2009, at Minden Field B, USM. It was organized by Institut Pengajian Siswazah (IPS) with collaboration from AIESEC in USM. I was part of the organizing committee from AIESEC in running the event.

A simple summary on what is FoN is about. FoN is a festival where students from all around the globe opened booths to showcase their home countries' specialties and delicacies and stuffs. There's also cultural performances by both students and the professionals such as Chinese intrumental performances, salsa dancing, and so on. It's like traveling around the world in just one afternoon.

It was a rather successful event, to say the least. Everyone presented had fun and their stomachs filled with free food 'cause there's an open house of sort at the festival in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration. Would love to take part again next time, be it as an organizing committee or not. Hopefully, there'll be another FoN next year.

Bangladesh's rice (dunno what is it though...)
A popular drink from Jordan
Some handicrafts from Somalia
Kung Fu performances by USM Kung Fu Club...Choy Fong so ying...

Just Some Update

Being a Maths student here in USM is freaking free. Flexible time, lousy lecturers (only few are exceptional) where you can just simply skip their classes and tutorials that even if you don't do it doesn't matter. Honestly, compare to all the Sciences Schools (Faculties), Maths are the most free. There's no reports to hand in or tedious lab works to complete and all. So, all in all, I feel blissful. Hehe...OK, I just speak for myself only. There are some Maths students who are really busy with their works and studies, just not me.

Anyway, last night, me and my friends went out to have supper and also celebrated his birthday before it's officially over in an hour or so (we did celebrated his birthday, albeit 2 days earlier...). Then, we started to plan our vacations during the semester break, where are we going and all. So, for sure, this coming break, I'm going south of Peninsula Malaysia, with the first stop being Johor and heading up back Melaka, Seremban and KL. There's many more places I wanna go but I don't want to jinx it by spilling it out. 'Till I secured my ride ticket, I'm keeping mum about it. One thing for sure, I'm excited (too excited to even study right now XD).

Then, we went to a nearby seaside to relax and enjoys a bottle or two of Heinekens. Feeling the breeze of sea air with friends are so much enjoyable. Stopped by at mamak stall for some drinks first before heading back hostels for rest. Thanks to the birthday boy for the treat. Very paiseh la, you treating us all.

We even fought for the last bottle...

Hiking at Bukit Jambul

This late afternoon, I went with my roommate to Bukit Jambul for hiking. It's my first time hiking even though I'm from Ipoh, a town surrounded by mountains and hills. Not a really high mountain as it just took roughly 10 to 15 minutes to reach to the top.

The view at the top of the mountain is rather nice. You can see the majestic Penang Bridge stretching along the South Channel and those high rise buildings in the mainland island. Can't take a good picture of it due to the trees shooting out everywhere and the lousy phone I called camera. In great need of a good one.

Next mountain to conquer, Bukit Bendera. Anyone wants to come with me???

There's freaking many of these kind of rich man houses...
Wild orchids (I think) are aplenty at the bottom of the hill...
The reds among the greens...
The trail I used to hike up...
At the top...
Lousy camera phone and the many tall trees unable me to capture the beautiful scenery
The trail back...

Money And Alcohol

Unlike someone who's heading to Singapore (and probably reached and having fun), I have to go back to Penang for the remaining days of this semester and face the impending finals which is less than two months away. It's time to have my eyes set on papers and books and not my laptop anymore and I mean business!

Yea yea, like that's gonna happen. The percentage of me doing that (I mean completely throw away my laptop) is lower than me hitting the jackpot of the lottery. I will study (not like I got any choices...) and try my best to catch up with the lessons in the class.

Anyway, about the Student Exchange Programme, I had asked my parents about it and this is roughly the transcript between me and my dad and mom (all the conversations are in Hokkien):

Me: (handing my dad the info bout exchange programme)
Dad: What's this?
Me: Student Exchange Programme.
Dad: Go lah. Go lah.
Me and mom: (look kinda surprised)
Dad: Go lah go lah.
Me: OK.
Dad: How much?
Me: Roughly 15-35k for a semester.
Dad: Then, no need go lah.
Mom: Your father's drunk, that's why he ask you to go.

I guessed he's not that drunk since he can quickly retake back his words when the dollar sign appeared. Anyone wants to sponsor me for the exchange programme???

USM Exchange Programme

Last Wednesday, I went for a gathering of sort organized by the USM International Office regarding the Exchange Programme made available for USM students. It's a programme ran by an agreement between USM and the partner universities where USM will send and receive students for the duration of one to two semesters per exchange. The students will be enrolled in an overseas partner university, taking courses and sitting for exams with regularly enrolled students, meaning, it's just like any other semester except for the fact that you're in a foreign university.

Besides, the great thing about this programme, for me at least, is that I would only have to pay the normal USM tuition fee, which is only about RM600+, and not the host university's tuition fee, should I join the programme. Of course, it does not include all the expenditures I'm gonna spend on when I'm there like foods, accommodation, and so on but according to the data provided by the International Office, the average expenditure is roughly between RM15k to RM35k.

http://www.canurb.com/media/images/globe_in_hand.jpg

Honestly, I'm tempted to join the programme mainly because I want to experience the world. I really don't want to be trapped inside Malaysia for the rest of my life. Not that I'm saying Malaysia ain't great (it's your own opinion...) but I really want to see the world, to be as far away from here as I can. I wanna feel the four season for myself, visit the famous places through my own eyes and not other medium.

Of course, there's always a down side to everything. The only setback for me is that I have to extend my study year for another year to do my final year project. It means that I have to see my fellow friends and coursemates graduated a year earlier than me. It also means that I have to do my last year alone since none of my coursemates are interested in it (there's one but I'm not sure of her decision yet...).

I'm not really discouraged by it. I don't really mind extending another year but I kinda already plan to do my master overseas. The main reason to do master overseas is almost the same as joining the exchange programme. Since I'm already set my mind to it, why would I want to do this programme anyway? Some more, I have yet to discuss it with my parents. Hmm, don't think they will against it gua. Just the financial matter that worries me if I were to join it.

OK, let's just assume I took part in the programme and was selected (there's a selection, by the way). Of all the countries offered, I would choose either Canada, US, Australia or Singapore, Singapore being the lowest rank among the four. I choose these countries mainly for one reason, it's English speaking countries. I can't choose Japan or Korea since I don't know their languages and it's hard to survive if you can't communicate with the locals. Dah lah my English not that strong, some more want me to speak Japanese/Korean? At least with Canada, US and Australia, I can cut off the language barrier. But I need to take IELTS/TOEFL should I applied for universities from these countries as they don't accept MUET. Stupid MUET, wonders why we have to take it? Why can't they just integrated IELTS/TOEFL into our educational system?

I most likely would not take up courses that have anything related to what I'm studying at all when I'm there. Most likely I'm gonna take English or creative writing or something I wanted to do for fun.

Don't think too far first. Consult with my parents first.

Movie of the Day

This morning, I had a test on MAT 251, code for Operations Research. For the whole semester, I pretty much clueless about the subject. Even my body was in the lecture, my mind teleported itself to dreamland most of the time. So, for me, this subject is like one of those sure-die victims from Final Destination movies. Just a matter of how gory my death gonna be.

And speaking of death, after the cutthroat test, me and my coursemates went to Queensbay to watch, what else, The Final Destination. Originally was to go watch Laughing Gor but due to the conflict of time/space conundrum, we decided for Final Destination.

Final Destination 4 French Poster by philippe1978.

I remembered watching the first movie ways back when I was in my early teens, I think, and thought it was quite a nice flick but as more and more sequels kept chunking out, the death scenes became more and more creative what with the advancement of CGI and stuffs. So, we get more blood and guts and brains and whatever organs popping out in exchange for so-so actings and storylines. The first movie, plane crash. Second, highway crash. Third, roller coaster crash. Now, Nascar race crash, which is a cheat as Nascar and highway both involved cars.

Like any of the past movies in the series, Death has a unique ways of getting his claims. As if setting up those traps and freak accidents not enough trouble, he even gives the main character a gift, premonition of sort, where he get to see what weapons Death using and all, spicing things up. Maybe Death get the thrills from it, watching young people running around trying to save others.

Really, watching movies like these make you think lives are really fragile and there are just about anything can take your life away. However hard you may try, if Death really wants you on his table, you can't really do anything as there's no escape from Death. Shit! I kinda spoil the movie, didn't I? Aiyar, surely you know what to expect from a movie named Final Destination, right?

By the way, I think if you watch this movie in 3-D, it might be more fun. Though I watched it in normal cinema, I could see how those scenes will pop out from the screen and make it more enjoyable, which is very important as the movie really didn't offer anything new though I like the scene in the cinema where people get killed. I appreciate the humor the director had set up. And try notice the character names passing through in the credit. There's one named MILF and MILF's husband. Haha.

Oh yea, one thing does make me ponder. Why on earth you classify a movie 18 SG if you were to cut scenes where people curse? I mean, if you saw your friends/boyfriends/girlfriends die in some freakish ways, you won't say, "Oh, my, how gory." Of course it's " Fuck!/Son of the bitch!/Mother fucker!" It's the norm, people!

理大游子吟创作歌曲演绎会

Last Friday, I went to 理大游子吟创作歌曲演绎会 (The Wanderers' Annual Live Concert) with Jacyn. What is The Wanderers', you wonders? Well, it's an musical organisation of sort outside the govern of USM where Chinese students gather around and sing and compose new songs. Every year, they will held a concert where the members will perform original songs live on stage. This year, which was their 18th year organising such concert, was held at Dewan Sri Pinang with the theme, 'Metamorphosis'.

The reason I went for it in the first place was as an act of support for my friends as few of my friends were performing in the concert. As it was strictly a Chinese show, all the people I saw was Chinese. If you have troubles understanding Chinese, you can just skip it. Luckily, my level of Mandarin is OK enough to understand what were they talking about during the sketches which were very entertaining. The same can't be said to the songs for I have no idea what were they singing about. What we did were just commenting on the singing, which some were very talented and some were just OK.

What both of us agreed was that the main entertaining value, for us la, was the sketches. It were filled with fun and the acting was believable. The best of them was Vivienne (wonders if I got spell wrongly???) which was very good. Though I don't know what most of them were singing, some of the songs composed were rather good. If I heard correctly, there were previous members whose works were picked and turned into record-breaking songs by Chinese singers such as Jolin Tsai. Hopefully, there will be another composer from the Wanderers that can break into the Chinese market.

One of the first performances...
The sketches which are funnier...

All in all, it was a pretty fun night.

There is a video I wanted to upload but it takes ages to do so. It was my friend, 永升, performance. Gonna try it later.

OK, I give up!!! Until I reached home, I won't try uploading that video anymore!!!

School of Mathematical Science's Interaction Night

Last night was our Interaction Night where all the undergrads from School of Mathematical Science (other uni called it Faculty, we called it School...called us unique) gathered around and talked and have fun. It was also the place where the freshmen would get their direct seniors which hopefully, could help them cope with their new lives.

The event was supposed to start at 7pm, but being Malaysian, it only began when it's almost 8pm. After some short speeches by all the VIPs, the event moved on to chit-chat session where people started to mingle around and interacted with each other. What I can notice at this session was that all the races don't really mix with each other. The Chinese have their own gangs, the Malays sat among themselves in a corner, there's barely any Indians at all. Rather sad, watching the un-unity among us. We are more in terms with our races rather than nationality. We are Malaysians!

Anyway, after that session, it's game time, which I did not have a chance to take part in as I was dragged out by someone as a punching bag. Ended up bruised and wounded. Haha. But I did get to see when KC got the whole game session in a mess and as a punishment, he was to do pole-dancing with the mic stand as a pole. Wonder if he knew what is pole dancing for what he did was more like a mix of martial art with silly dance. XD

After that, nothing much had happened except for the juniors to get their direct seniors' contacts. Met some juniors and one of them was a banana, like me, though more severe kind as in he was totally doesn't understand Mandarin and barely speak Cantonese and Hokkien. The only dielect he knew was Hainanese which is of rare commodity here. He has my sympathy here. I still remembered the time where I was in a state of culture shock with the air around me heavy with Mandarin and I was rather quiet due to my weak Mandarin but as time went by, I began to be more like my usual self and talked more and more. Screw my broken Mandarin, as long as people understand it, that's fine by me. I do hope he survived it.

Photos will be uploaded once I got hold of it. Took me ages just to upload these two. Will try again later.

APEX Or APEK? Take 1

Everyone in Malaysia knew that Universiti Sains Malaysia was granted the APEX (Accelerated Programme for Excellence) status by the Government. What's APEX status? Suffice to say, those universities that are promoted to that status will be given a LARGE amount of $$$ for the projects that the Uni seems important. APEX status also raised the profile of USM to the making of a premier university in Malaysia. What's APEK, you're wondering? Well, it's an Hokkien word for uncle/old man that sounds rather rude.

Last month or so, USM created a huge blunder in their first direct intake of undergrads, where they uploaded a list of 8k+ applicants successfully accepted into the uni only to be told on the following day that the list was wrong and only 3k+ applicants were given seats in the university. It was a huge error on the part of the university that the public wonders if USM deserved the APEX status.

OK, enough introductory. I'm gonna start my own analysis on whether USM deserved the status based on my own experiences inside USM main campus. I began a new semester just yesterday, but I came back to the campus on Sunday. With the outbreak of H1N1 flu, everyone is taking great precaution and so did USM since there were reports that there have been few cases, though how accurate it was, I had no idea. When I went to register for my hostel room, I was asked of these following questions to check if I had the flu:
  • Awak ada selsema, demam, batuk atau sebarang sintom-sintom H1N1 (Do you had any flu, fever, cough, or any symptoms resembling H1N1)?
  • Adakah awak pernah jumpa sesiapa dari luar negara (Did you come into contact of anyone from oversea)?
  • Awak kursus apa (What course are you taking)?
  • Awak dari mana (Which state are you from)?
Once I answered all these, I was given a form to fill and tick and was declared free from H1N1. That's it. No checking temperature or whatsoever. It's felt more like participating a survey. For such a 'great' precaution, I gave you APEK status.

Secondly is what I detested the most. For this semester, I had morning classes for everyday starting from 8am. Yesterday, I woke up around 7am and prepared myself for class. When I reached there, I entered the lecture hall waiting for the lecturer to arrive but that person did not come to the lecture hall. I waited until 8.20am before I leaved the hall. The class was cancelled without even bothered informing us. The same thing happened this morning for the stupid Ethnic Relationship course which we were compulsory to take. Woke up early, got myself ready, walked to the hall, class was cancelled. I'm like, COME ON. Can't they at least told us by sticking a freaking piece of paper on the door or something saying 'There's no class today. Class will commence on so and so.' Is that so hard to do? Go die la, APEK, for runing my sleep!

Back In Penang

After the long (and unproductive) sem break, I'm finally back in Penang for the new sem of the new study year. How time seems to fly without us noticing it. Anyhow, a new beginning, therefore, a new attitude towards studies. Somehow, during the start of a new sem, I would be so motivated to study but halfway towards it, my driving forces slowly dissipating into thin air, leaving me struggling when the examinations arrived. Well, I would try to break the cycle this time around (and I greatly hope so)...

This morning, my whole family was heading to Penang, I was for study, they were for shopping. Halfway during the ride, I realised I did not bring my pillows and blanket. I had packed it in my room but forgotten to put it inside the car. So, have to get a pillow when shopping. And when I entered my new hostel room (I had already shifted rooms for the last two sems), I was happy for this is the best among the three rooms. While the last room I had slept in was OK, the first room I had was simply horrendous. Too scary til will leave nightmares for little children. Therefore, I can proudly said I'm totally satisfied with it. When I thought nothing could make it any better, here comes another surprise; this room has a freaking strong Wi-Fi. Simply fantastic!

Oh, yea. My cousin sister got married last Saturday and the wedding, though it was a rather low-key, was still nice. And the best part of all was that I got to meet my baby cousin. At least I think he is my cousin. The relationship is so complicated in my mother side that I'm quite blurred.

He is so adorable. When asked what is his name, he will answered 8855 as if he was giving you 4-D numbers for you to buy. And when want to take photos of him, he will make those cute faces for you to capture it. How adorable!!!

Anyhow, I uploaded 2 1 videos of my cousin making faces for the cameras. You see yourselves just how cute he is.

Last Gathering

This morning, I went to Audrey's house for the sole purpose of baking cupcakes with her and Pui Yee. Drove all the ways to her house just to bake cupcakes. Sound rather silly but I did have fun. Actually, quite nice the whole process of baking but due to me being a guy, therefore, in my family, I seldom got the chance of baking/cooking (OK, mostly because I'm lazy...). Hence, the need to go to friends' houses to do so. Hehe.

What's cupcakes we were making? According to the recipe, it's called Nigella's cupcakes. Nigella as in Nigella Lawson. Ingredients? Too lazy to type it. Go search yourselves la if interested.

Making of the batter
In cups ready for the oven
How beautiful my our creations are...
The icing, if you can see...
See? Nice le???
Sweet, lemony icing dripping off the cakes...

Then, we headed to David's Diner at Greentown for lunch with Stef. According to Pui Yee, it's a restaurant serving Mexican food. I had a Seafood Alfredo and it's quite nice. After lunch, we went to K-box to pay our tribute to the beloved Michael Jackson who had passed away recently. Again, it was so much fun singing our hearts and lungs out. After the three hours session, my voice had became hoarse.

This is kinda last gathering before each of us head back to our Uni for the new semester. Just 4 days left before I'm going back USM. How time flies...

Semester Result Is Out...II

Can't believe almost a year had passed since my enrollment into USM. I just got my Semester 2 result and I'm gonna self-analyse it again like last time.

Honestly, for this course, I just attended 1 class throughout the semester and I did not touch the notes until a week before the exam which I just took about 2 days to finish the notes. Well, to say I'm not satisfy with the result will surely get me killed.

Communicative Chinese II
Nothing much to say except that it's way too easy for a half-banana (Chinese but do not know Mandarin) like me. Not a subject I'm worried about.

Advanced Calculus
It's a blessing that the lecturer is a very nice and linear person and his paper not too hard to score. I'm glad it's an A.

Linear Algebra
This paper was prepared by 2 lecturers, 1 by my Calculus lecturer and the other was the course's original lecturer. She was supposed to teach us the subject but due to whatever reason, she can't make it for the first half of the semester. So, my Calculus lecturer took over. I believe that I did quite OK for his part but not too well for her part. It's my coursework that save my skin.

Applied Statistical Methods
A sad case here for I did study for the subject only to panic during the paper. I even got too assured till the night before the paper I went steamboat with my friends. A mistake I will not make again.

Malaysian Economy
Still the same result as my last economy paper. What to do? I don't mingle well with economy.

(FINALLY...) Exam Over!

It's something worth celebrating 'cause exams are over! Screw it on how I performed in it...what matters the most is the END of it...

Analysis on how I performed...

MAT 102 (Advanced Calculus) - 14/04/09
Hmm...should be OK I think...much easier than what I expected...Hopefully an A...Hehe

LTC 200 (Chinese Language Communication II) - 18/04/09
Haha...sure A...simple la...

HTU 223 (Islamic Civilization and Asian Civilization) -20/04/09, 9am
Hmm...last minute study...didn't attend lecture AT ALL except for the 1st class...even though I didn't attend the classes, I get the gist from reading the notes, which is Islamic civilization-good, Western civilization-evil...it's just 80 MCQs so, if don't know, shoot...

SEU 228 (Malaysia Economy) - 20/04/09, 2.15pm
Another horrible subject...there's no textbooks whatsoever for us to refer to...our reference notes-Rancangan Malaysia Ke-9...I'm like, WTF...even though I knew what topics the questions will be about, I really don't expect much from this subject...screw it...if can maintain B-, it's already a blessing...

MAT 111 (Linear Algebra) - 21/04/09
At first aim A but after the exam, B+ also very happy already...too many nights burning midnight oil lately...even during the exam my brain was like so vacant...haha...some more didn't practise...haiz...

MSG 162 (Applied Statistical Methods) - 27/04/09
Was full of confidence (not really la but still...) before the exam...the night before the exam even when steamboat with friends (post bout it later...) till 11pm...but when I came out from the exam hall, all I said was FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!...screw up...not enough time to finish...not sure of my answers...haiz...

Don't care la...in 9hours time I'll be heading Genting Highland with family...hurray...finally can enter casino...gonna gamble...wish me luck!

After Exam (Almost...)

Lately my sleeping hours were like those blood-sucking vamps, active till wee of the night and sleep during afternoon. Haiz..what to do, exams were on and I barely covered everything. I even didn't sleep for few days already just to brush up my studies. Now that 5 out of my 6 papers were in the past, I can relax a bit since I got like 6 days to do revision for the last paper.

Yesterday, went out with my friends to Queensbay to watch the Thai horror movie, Coming Soon. The movie was nothing special, just some typical horror movie. Then, we went to Manhattan Fish Market to enjoys their fish and chip. Very nice. We sat there and chat till like almost 6pm. Mostly gossips (who they like, who they don't like, etc) and TVB series.

Taken from where I sat
My mango juice
My Alaskan pollock

After lunch at Manhattan, we shifted our dinner to Dragon-i for their RM 1 chicken. Jesus, their dishes are like super expensive le. Just one plate of fried rice also cost RM 16. And it's just for one serving only. Due to our students' status, we can't like afford anything in the menu but since we had glued our butts on their chairs, not ordering anything and leave would be so humiliating. So, we just ordered 1 plate of fried rice and that RM 1 chicken that had us in the restaurant in the first place.
The stupid promotion that draws us in...
...the restaurant...

When the super expensive fried rice was served, we had our first taste, which is nothing. That's right, a bloody tasteless fried rice was served to us and it took us RM 16. My uni cafe only costed me less than 1 buck for a plate of fried rice and it tasted a million time better. Even that RM 1 chicken tasted way better and it's way cheaper too.

The stupid fried rice
The tidbit snack that came along...
...which finished faster and tasted MUCH better than that rice...
The RM 1 chicken which is our kicap ayam...

While the food was not nice, the deco in the restaurant was very pretty. It's very Chinese and serene. We were seated by window so can enjoyed ourselves with the view.

Terracota men...
Pixs on the wall...
The light...
Don't look at the car...look at the bridge...
Seng Aik goes artistic...Hehe...
The gang...

After dinner, we went for some joy ride around Penang. Stop a while in Jelutong. We sat there and felt the breeze in the air...only for a while 'cause a moment later, it's raining.

Then, we went back Queensbay again for night screening of Knowing. This is a last minute plan, therefore, we ended up being on the first row in the cinema hall. It was so uncomfortable especially for me. Haiz...

The movie was rather good, though the ending sucks. Very weird last scene. The CGI was awesome, with the plane crashing, subway train overturning, and the dying of the Earth.

Before heading back hostel, went for supper. Barely had anything during dinner, everyone was quite hungry by the time the movie ended. Went to Khaleel, the usual spot.

All in all, a nice way to reduce the stress we had during the exam. Now, back to the Statistic notes for my last paper...then, FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
